Mattel Introduces the First Autistic Barbie Doll. Includes image of a Barbie doll in purple dress.

Mattel has introduced the first-ever Autistic Barbie® Doll, a powerful step forward in inclusive play. Created in collaboration with and guided by the autistic community, this doll represents common ways autistic individuals may experience, process, and communicate with the world.

Key Features Designed with Intention

Body Articulation:

The doll includes articulated elbows and wrists, allowing for stimming, hand flapping, and expressive gestures that can help with sensory processing or expressing excitement.

Eye Gaze:

A slightly averted eye gaze reflects how some autistic individuals may avoid direct eye contact.

Sensory & Communication Accessories:

  • Fidget Spinner: A pink finger clip fidget spinner that actually spins, offering a calming sensory outlet
  • Noise-Cancelling Headphones: Stylish and functional headphones to help reduce sensory overload
  • AAC Tablet: A tablet displaying symbol-based Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) apps to support everyday communication

Sensory Friendly Fashion:

The doll wears a loose-fitting purple A-line dress with short sleeves to reduce fabric-to-skin contact, paired with flat purple shoes for comfort, stability, and ease of movement.

This isn’t just about a new doll. It’s about representation, understanding, and belonging. When children see themselves reflected in play, it helps build confidence, empathy, and inclusion from an early age.

Well done to Mattel for setting a new standard in representation through play!
