Do you have a little one starting school later this month or in September? Are you wondering about the type of activities that might be useful in preparing them for schooling? If so, we’ve put together this blog which highlights 5 activities that are easy, accessible and useful in helping your little ones prepare for school.

1. Scavenger hunt: This is a great activity for learning how to follow instructions. Also, as children have to follow clues and make decisions on where to look, they are developing executive functioning and problem-solving skills which will come in handy in the classroom. This is also an opportunity to get active and develop gross motor skills.

2. Colouring: Colouring is a fun way to develop pencil control and hand strength and grip for writing activities. Furthermore, if you place the drawing on an easel or some other vertical surface, you also get your child to improve shoulder stability and fine motor control.

3. Saving coins in a piggy bank: Putting coins in a piggy bank or a jar with a slot is an excellent way to practise fine motor skills and counting. Having a jar with a screw-top lid also gives your child practice in opening and closing containers.

4. Picnic: Whether it’s a picnic play set or a real picnic, a picnic provides children with the opportunity to get used to pouring drinks, opening containers and carrying items which will be good practice for them eating a packed lunch at school or school dinner. If your child is going to be eating school dinners, encourage them to practise carrying items on a tray as well.

5. I Spy: This is a great game to play whilst waiting in public places or being out and about. This activity helps children to become more aware of their surroundings and also develops visual perceptual skills.

Finally, don’t forget to provide opportunities for practising getting socks and shoes on independently and using clothes fasteners wherever you get the chance.
